God’s Throne in Heaven
(1) After this I looked, and there was an open door in heaven. And the voice (of Jesus; see Revelation 1:10) I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here! I will show you the things that must happen after this.”
(2) Immediately I was in the Holy Spirit, and there in heaven stood a throne with someone sitting on it (see Isaiah 6:1). (3) And the one who sat on the throne had the appearance of the gemstones of green jasper and red ruby (carnelian).
And encircling the throne was a rainbow that shined like emerald stones, (4) and 24 elders sitting on thrones wearing white clothes and gold victors’ crowns (wreaths) on their heads. (5) From the throne came lightning flashes, noises (rumblings), and bolts (peals) of thunder. In front of the throne were seven torches blazing with fire. The seven torches are the sevenfold Spirit (the Holy Spirit) of God. (6) The surface in front of the throne looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.
In the center and around the throne, I saw four living creatures covered with eyes in front and back. (7) The first living creature looked like a lion, the second living creature looked like an ox, the third living creature had a human face, and the fourth living creature looked like a flying eagle. (8) Each of the four living creatures had six wings covered with eyes inside and out (all around, even under its wings). They never stopped shouting day and night, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is still to come!”
(9) And whenever the four living creatures give glory, honor, and thanksgiving to the one who sits on the throne—who lives for ever and ever—(10) the 24 elders fall down in prostration before the one who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They throw their crowns (wreaths) before the throne and declare, (11) “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory, honor, and power, because you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being!”
