2 Thessalonians 1

The Introduction

2 Thessalonians 1:1-2

(1) From Paul, Silas, and Timothy, to the church of Thessalonica in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (2) May God the Father and Jesus Christ our Lord bless you with grace and peace!

Faith Growing, Love Increasing

2 Thessalonians 1:3-4

(3) My brothers and sisters, we should always thank God for you, and rightly so, because your faith is continuing to grow more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is also increasing. (4) Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials that you are enduring.

God’s Righteous Judgment

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10

(5) All this is evidence that God’s judgment is just, and so you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. (6) Since God is just, it is only right for him to give trouble to those who trouble you (7) and to give comfort to you who are suffering, and to us as well.

This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven (at his second coming) in blazing fire with his powerful angels. (8) He will punish everyone at that time who does not know God and does not obey the gospel (good news) of our Lord Jesus. (9) They will suffer the punishment of everlasting destruction and be separated from the Lord’s presence and from his glorious power (10) on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all the people who have believed. This includes you in Thessalonica, because you believed the gospel message that we told you.

Prayer for the Thessalonian Church

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

(11) And with this end in mind we constantly pray for you, so that our God will make you worthy of his calling, and that through his power he will bring to completion your every good desire and your every good work of faith. (12) We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in him, through the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
