1 Thessalonians 1

The Introduction

1 Thessalonians 1:1

(1) From Paul, Silas, and Timothy, to the church in the city of Thessalonica in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace and peace to you!

Thanksgiving for the Thessalonian Church

1 Thessalonians 1:2-6

(2) We always thank God for all of you and never stop talking to God about you in our prayers. (3) We remember in the presence of our God and Father—your work produced by faith, your labor motivated by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

(4) My brothers and sisters loved by God, we know that he has chosen you (5) because the gospel (good news) of Christ came to you not with words only, but also in the power of the Holy Spirit, with deep conviction. Surely you remember how we lived among you for your benefit. (6) You became imitators of us and of the Lord, because you received the gospel message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.

The Thessalonian Church is a Shining Example

1 Thessalonians 1:7-10

(7) And so the church in Thessalonica became an example to all the believers throughout the Roman provinces of Macedonia and Achaia. (8) For the Lord’s message spread out from you not only through Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has become known everywhere (in the Roman empire). Therefore we do not need to tell others about you, (9) because they themselves report what kind of welcome you gave us. They bear witness how you turned to God from dead idols to serve the living and true God, (10) and how you wait for his Son—whom God raised from the dead—to come from heaven, Jesus, who rescues us from the coming judgment.
