1 Peter 5:1-4
(1) To the church elders (presbyters) among you, I exhort you as a fellow elder and an eyewitness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the future glory to be revealed. (2) Be shepherds of the flock of God that is under your care, watching over them not out of obligation because you must, but because you want to, as God has called you to do; not pursing dishonest gain, but passionate to serve; (3) not using your spiritual authority to lord it over those God has entrusted to you, but being an example to the flock, living a life they can imitate. (4) And when the Head Shepherd appears at his second coming, you will receive the crown of glory whose brightness will never fade away.
Live in Humility and Resist Satan
1 Peter 5:5-11
(5) In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. Everyone should clothe themselves with humility toward one another, because as it is written in Proverbs 3:34, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (6) Therefore, humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, so that he can lift you up in the proper time. (7) Cast all your anxiety (worries) on God because he cares for you!
(8) Be alert and self-controlled, because your enemy the devil prowls (sneaks) around like a roaring lion, hunting for someone to devour. (9) Resist (take a stand against) him! Stand strong in your faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is experiencing the same kind of suffering. (10) And after you have suffered a short time, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast. (11) To God be the power for ever and ever! Amen (let it be).
1 Peter 5:12-14
(12) With the help of Silas (Paul’s mission partner; see Acts 15:39-40. He was probably the deliverer of the letter of 1 Peter throughout the regions of Asia Minor, modern Turkey; see 1 Peter 1:1), my faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you and to tell you that this is the true grace of God. Stand strong in it! (13) The church in Babylon (probably Rome), chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark (the nephew of Barnabas and the writer of the Gospel of Mark; see Acts 15::37-39). (14) Greet one another with a kiss of love (on the cheeks). Peace to all of you who are in Jesus Christ!
