Sexual Immorality in the Corinthian Church
1 Corinthians 5:1-8
(1) It has been reported to me that there is sexual perversion among you in the church, and of a kind that even unbelievers (pagans) do not tolerate (which is against Greek law): For a man is having sex with his father’s wife (his stepmother). (2) And you are proud of it! Instead, shouldn’t you be filled with mourning and have put out of your church fellowship the man who is doing this? (3) For me, although I am physically absent, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in spirit, I have already passed judgment in the name of the Lord Jesus on this man who has been doing this. (4) So when the church gathers and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present—(5) turn this man over to Satan (probably by excommunication) for the destruction of his sinful nature (flesh), so that his spirit will be saved on the day (second coming) of the Lord.
(6) Your boasting is terrible! Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of bread dough? (7) Get rid of the old yeast, so that you will be a new lump of unleavened bread—as you truly are. For Christ—our Passover lamb—has been sacrificed for us. (8) Therefore, let us celebrate the Passover feast, not with the old bread leavened with hatred and evil, but with the unleavened bread full of sincerity and truth.
Purify the Church
1 Corinthians 5:9-13
(9) I wrote in my first letter (a lost letter written from Ephesus) that you must not associate with sexually perverse people, (10) but I was not talking about the immoral people of this world who are greedy, robbers, or idolaters. For if I was saying that, you would have to leave this world. (11) But now I am writing to you so that you will not associate with anyone who claims to be a believer but is sexually perverse or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunk or a robber. Do not even eat with such people.
(12) What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside the church? (13) For God will judge those outside the church. But as it is written in Deuteronomy 22:21, “Expel the wicked person from among you.”
